Hot Takes: A Living Room Review of “Some Like It Hot”

SETTING: Michael and Tony’s living room. A couch, soft lighting, Playbills and Broadway books on the coffee table. Michael is seated already and flipping through the program from the evening’s performance. Tony enters, flopping onto the couch.

TONY:  Alright, I’m saying it—I really liked that show.

MICHAEL:  (smugly)  Uh-huh. And how many times did I tell you?

TONY:  Yeah, yeah. But seriously—I had no idea what to expect, and it was just… joyful. That Daphne storyline? It hit me in the gut and the heart at the same time. So hopeful, especially right now. It felt like the kind of story we need.

MICHAEL:  That’s what makes it special. It’s got that old-school musical feel—big numbers, tap breaks, jazz hands—but the story’s completely reimagined. Modern, inclusive, and still hilarious.

TONY:  Honestly, the first act was fun, but it didn’t fully grab me. Then the second act rolled around and I was hooked. The energy, the emotion—and that scene with all the doors?

MICHAEL:  (laughs)  Oh my god, yes! It was like a perfectly timed farce meets dance number. I was watching the ensemble like it was a magic trick.

TONY:  They were flying in and out like it was a cartoon. Someone backstage is definitely nursing a pulled hamstring right now.

MICHAEL:  Worth it. And the casting? So good. I saw the original Broadway cast, and tonight’s leads totally held up. That kind of talent on tour? Not always a given, but they nailed it.

TONY:  Yeah, they brought the house down. Those vocals? Dang.

MICHAEL:  The whole score is like that. I listen to the soundtrack a lot!. It’s joyful, it’s jazzy—it just makes me feel good. One of those rare shows that’s as fun to listen to as it is to see.

TONY:  Okay, I get it now. You were right. This one’s going in the playlist.

MICHAEL:  (smiling) I love being right.

TONY:  Don’t make it weird.

MICHAEL:  Too late.

Tony rolls his eyes.  The lights fade.
